Patty Cake’s Is Back in Downtown Clayton!

After nearly two years away, Denetra Witherspoon Jackson has reopened Patty Cake’s Littlest Cupcakes in Downtown Clayton — returning to the same storefront where an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis forced her plans to change almost as soon as they began.

When Denetra Witherspoon Jackson moved Patty Cake’s Littlest Cupcakes to its current Downtown Clayton location in 2024, she had a lot of plans for what the little shop could become.

She barely got the chance.

Just one month and 20 days after moving into the space, Jackson was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“It was important for me to reopen my physical location,” Jackson told The Clayton Dispatch. “I did not fulfill everything I wanted to accomplish due to my illness at the time.”

Patty Cake’s closed its doors on December 13, 2024.

They stayed closed until August 21, 2026.

Now, after more than a year and a half away, the Littlest Cupcake Shop is back.

And for Jackson, reopening wasn’t simply about getting back into the cupcake business. It was about finishing something she never really got the opportunity to start the way she wanted.

She put, in her words, “a lot of heart, time and money” into bringing the shop back — in part because people in the community kept asking her to.

That community connection goes back quite a bit further than this particular storefront.

Jackson says Downtown Clayton is where Patty Cake’s first got its start, around 2010, at 421 East Main Street near Jones Lunch.

“Downtown Clayton means a lot to me because that’s where I first started,” she said.

So, what’s back?

The cupcakes, obviously.

Patty Cake’s has brought back its fresh-baked cupcakes and custom flavored milkshakes, while expanding the case with cheesecake cups, cookies, mini cakes and cookie sandwiches.

Jackson also has some savory ideas she’d eventually like to introduce, including chicken salad sandwiches, chicken salad bowls and fresh-made grab-and-go salads.

And because I take the important investigative work seriously, I also asked which cupcake Clayton is sleeping on.

Jackson’s answer: lemon with lemon glaze. [YUM!]

As for her own favorite, it’s birthday cake — a flavor she makes sure is available every day.

“Because every day is someone’s birthday.”

Hard to argue with that logic.

If Downtown Clayton itself had an official cupcake flavor, Jackson says it would probably be a toss-up between birthday cake and strawberry cream cheese crunch, with lemon buttercream hanging close behind.

Patty Cake’s is also offering cupcake and cake decorating classes, giving customers a chance to do a little more than simply eat the finished product.

Reopening the doors was the big first step. Now Jackson is focused on reminding Clayton that Patty Cake’s is back — and giving longtime customers plenty of reasons to rediscover the shop.

She says the community played a big role in her decision to return, and she’s excited to welcome people back into a space she put so much heart, time and money into rebuilding.

“Please support local,” Jackson said. “I put a lot of heart, time and money into opening back up because my community asked me to.”

After everything that interrupted her first run in this location, that makes this week’s Good Thing pretty easy..

Downtown Clayton got one of its sweetest little businesses back — and that feels worth celebrating. Welcome back, Ms. Jackson!
